The Manager Sustainability manages the execution of BME’s ESG strategic plan. You will lead research and analysis used to develop corporate sustainability strategies to ensure that business practices, products, and services are environmentally friendly and compliant with government rules and regulations and are aligned with the BME ESG strategic plan.

BME Group is already active in many areas of ESG, for instance:
- Plastic packaging reduction in several OpCo’s
- Waste collection services for our customers
- Cross-OpCo program to improve Safety for our employees
- Group-wide program to improve Employee engagement
We are starting to build expertise in our OpCo’s to provide innovative solutions on ESG (e.g. piloting urban mining with our suppliers). There is strong momentum and commitment in the organization to progress on ESG. However, we need to collaborate and coordinate our efforts more across OpCo’s to benefit from our scale and make an impact. As The Manager Sustainability you will work together with managers, employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders to address the organizations approach to environmental responsibility with the goal to minimize the company’s environmental impact.
Purpose of the Role
The Manager Sustainability manages the execution of BME’s ESG strategic plan. You will lead research and analysis used to develop corporate sustainability strategies to ensure that business practices, products, and services are environmentally friendly and compliant with government rules and regulations and are aligned with the BME ESG strategic plan.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Executes and monitors BME ESG strategic plan and processes to identify areas in and processes to which improvements can be made in accordance with the organization’s commitment to sustainability.
- Develops better ways of working, processes, frameworks, tools, and capture synergies across OpCo’s within the areas of sustainability.
- Drafts and implements sustainable organizational policies that address environmental concerns.
- Evaluates efficacy of sustainability programs; recommends and implements improvements as necessary.
- Considers sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs.
- Drafts and prepares reports, presentations, and proposals; presents proposals and recommendations to the Group Director Environmental Social and Governance.
- Establishes and manages collaborations with 3rd parties that contribute to reaching BME sustainability goals.
- Explores, designs and shares insights about business models that improve sustainability performance
- Maintains current working knowledge of, and ensures compliance with, all applicable local, state, federal, and internal environmental laws and regulations.
- Evangelize sustainability across our company in trainings and workshops

Education and Experience
Experience in executing and monitoring ESG strategy development and implementation (incl. ESG reporting and development of measurement frameworks) for a larger international Group, within private equity or a public company.
- Proven track record in executing and monitoring environmental and sustainability initiatives in line with our established ESG goals, ideally in a similar (distribution) environment
- Relevant educational qualifications, including a Bachelor or master’s degree in either finance, economics, environment management or sustainability
- Successful and proven track record in acting as a change agent, in ESG related topics
- Broad business and technological acumen to integrate metrics on ESG performance into systems and data architecture
- Experience in coordinating and supporting the completion of annual submissions to third-party ESG rating agencies such as CDP and Sustainalytics (among others)
- Advanced knowledge in ESG data reporting and excel, and/or other reporting tools
- Understanding of global and European reporting standards such as GRI and IIRC, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), EU Taxonomy, and other similar
- Highly organized and results-oriented with demonstrated experience managing cross-enterprise reporting processes
- A stable career track with clear career progression within a limited number of employers
- Experience with working in an international and matrix environment
- Fluent in English and German
