Who we are
BME | Building Materials Europe, headquartered in the Netherlands, is a leading building materials distribution platform in Continental Europe. We have national and/or regional leadership positions across the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and France. BME was established end of 2019 as a carve-out from CRH Plc (previously known as CRH Europe Distribution). BME is now owned by The Blackstone Group, one of the world’s leading investment firms.
Where we come from
BME may be a new name, but our local brands and businesses have long and rich histories. Our Group started in 1973 through the acquisition of Van Neerbos Group in the Netherlands by CRH Plc, followed by more than 50 acquisitions done over the following decades across multiple geographies. Our operating companies in the countries retain deep roots in their communities. In 2019, CRH decided to divest its Europe Distribution Division after almost half a century of ownership.
What we do
BME sells building materials to professional builders, contractors, craftsmen, (specialized) installers and consumers. We do this through a large network of branches and showrooms operating under trusted and well-known local brands. We are active in three business areas: General Builders Merchants (GBM), Sanitary, Heating and Plumbing (SHAP) and Do-It-Yourself (DIY).
Our business model
As a wholesaler or distributor, we operate between a large group of suppliers of different types of building materials and our diverse and even larger customer base. We use showrooms, branches and also online platforms to sell our product range and provide service to our customers. The products we distribute are a mix of branded products and also a large range of our own private labels (e.g. ProOne and Procasa). Our teams in our branches provide excellent service, training & advice and offer a large range of products available under one roof allowing us to deliver on job sites or allow customers to collect the goods themselves. We always aim for a dense network of branches across the territory we cover, following the work place of our customers.
We provide flexible and reliable logistical solutions, delivering our different and mostly complex to handle building materials to the job site and most importantly for our customers, on time. Additionally, we offer our customers tailored financing options. These are key elements of a business model which delivers solid value to our customers. Our customers use our products in three main segments (in order of importance for us); residential, non-residential and infrastructure.
Our people are our greatest asset. Our business success is based on the knowledge and strong customers relationships held by our 9,500 employees.
